The beginning of my journey that lead me to become a social media enthusiast from a wide-eyed college student.
A piece of white paper with the words “What is Facebook?” lay on my desk, those few words are what started my journey in social media. As a new intern in 2007, I was tasked with diving into the unknown world of social media and determining if there was a place for ARM within it. With the support of my “Rogue Leaders”, we not only determine this was an opportunity ARM could not miss out on, but a pathway to reaching audiences and markets we never dreamed of.
Did I mention I was a “trip”? That’s right my internship was funded out of excess travel budget…so for the price of my summer’s work, we could have sent someone to England and back…or that’s the terms we like to joke about it in. The initial appeal of social media was always, “well it’s free”…so why not try it. In the reality of today, social media has grown far beyond individual’s posting their whereabouts, but to interactive and expansive networks of resources, accredited and “street”-credited.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could build a career around social media, but boy was I wrong! After a little more than 3 years at ARM, we now have over 10 Twitter handles with 17,000+ followers, 5 blog communities with 2.6 Million+ views, a YouTube channel (ARMflix) with 5 million+ views, a Facebook page with 4,000+ fans, a LinkedIn group (ARM Based Group) primarily run and monitored by its 8,000+ group members. Not to mention we are starting to look into social media channels in China: Sina Weibo (Twitter equivalent) and YouKu (YouTube equivalent).
I am proud to say that I actually enjoy my work and I am happy to be a part of a team (and company) that is forward thing and open minded to allow social media to take an influential part in their media strategies. I look forward to what is to come in the future and the endless possible social media is capable of.
